Q&A With Ellie

How did you get into the events industry?

While growing up, my parents were always extremely creative with our family events. We did family sports days, themed birthday parties, movie nights, the lot. I loved the creativity and the joy these events brough to everyone. I think it was them who really sparked my interest in pursuing a career in events. While in college, I got a job as an event assistant, and the deal was sealed. I went on to study events at university and my career took off from there.

You spent some time working in-house at a big company. What motivated you to make the switch from in-house to working at an agency?

It was the variety and versatility of the projects i could work on at an agency that drew me back. Not to say that working in-house doesn’t offer variety, but there is usually more repetition in the events you organise. I am someone who is always seeking a new challenge, so moving onto the agency side made sense for me. I also liked that working at an agency would allow me a greater creative reign!

What are the biggest differences you’ve noticed between working in-house versus at an agency?

The pace is probably the most noticeable difference. At an agency, it is always full steam ahead. There are new projects, briefs and clients coming in at all times, and there is always something that requires your attention. No doubt that in-house event management jobs also involve a lot of pressure, but when you are at an agency, you have a responsibility to a number of clients and events at once.

What new skills or perspectives have you gained since joining an agency?

At Pure, I have been able to gain a lot of exposure to working with clients, while in-house I was usually the client. It has been interesting to be on the other side of it all. I’ve also sharpened my creativity and learned new technical tools, like event app development and delegate management skills. From a perspective standpoint, I’ve become more attuned to market trends, while appreciating the value of diverse ideas in event design.

Can you share a specific project or event that you’ve worked on at Pure that you are particularly proud of?

Oh, I am lucky. We have lots to choose from! Some of my favourite ones are actually the events we do for our tech clients. I feel like we can really get creative with their briefs and, with AI being such a major trend right now, it’s fun seeing all the new enhancements develop and get implemented at events.
